Collaboration

"Collaboration, is a help that is given so that someone can achieve something that, otherwise, they would not have been able to do or it would have cost them more.". (Pérez, P., Merino, M., 2014)

On this page, you will find episodes of Podcasts, TED Talks and Wellbeing Gym Activities.

This kit is a simple and replicable guide that will allow you as an employee, mentor, or tutor, in particular, to implement key activities that support the well-being of our students.

The effective use of these monthly kits will not only allow students to have access to relevant information but will also contribute to the well-being of our employees.

During the month of August, we will be working on collaboration, teamwork, and the beginning of a new semester.

In this section, you will find resources with questions and activities that you can do with your mentees to work on during this month. If you would like to refer them to this site, please share with them the mirror page, tqueremos.tec.mx/en/values/collaboration as these guides are just for you.

We hope it helps and thank you for your work!

TED Talks

How to Deal with Difficult People (15 min)

Objective: To reflect on how to deal with people we consider difficult, and why we should learn to deal with them for our well-being.

Duration: 15 minutes

After watching Jay Johnson's talk, reflect:

  1. When you encounter people who seem to you to have a difficult personality, what archetype have you assigned to them?
  2. Have you ever met someone who seemed difficult to you, but after a certain amount of time became your friend? What do you think made that change happen? How did you find a middle ground?
  3. Have you ever been considered a difficult person to work with? Why do you think you were considered that way?
  4. Which of the tips Johnson gave have you used before? What new things have you learned that you can start doing in this new semester?

How to stay calm when you know you’ll be stressed

How to stay calm when you know you’ll be stressed

You're not at your best when you're stressed. In fact, your brain has evolved over millennia to release cortisol in stressful situations, inhibiting rational, logical thinking but potentially helping you survive, say, being attacked by a lion. Neuroscientist Daniel Levitin thinks there's a way to avoid making critical mistakes in stressful situations, when your thinking becomes clouded — the pre-mortem. "We all are going to fail now and then," he says. "The idea is to think ahead to what those failures might be."

What makes a friendship last?

What makes a friendship last?

Sustaining friendships and making new friends can be challenging, even when we know it’s important. So how can we make our friendships last without feeling overwhelmed? And is there a formula to follow for making new ones? To find out, data journalist Mona Chalabi turns to her most trusted sources: data and her mum.

The Happiness Lab

How to Handle Change

Objective: To reflect on the changes that have taken place in our lives, how they have changed us as people and how we can manage them.

Duration: 37 minutes

Before listening to The Happiness Lab episode, reflect:

  1. What have been the moments when your life has changed? It could be entering college, moving to a new city, or any event where you felt your identity changed. Keep this in mind as you listen to the episode.
  2. Do you think identity changes throughout life, or is it permanent?

After listening to the episode, reflect:

  1. What were you like before that big change, and what do you think you are like now?
  2. Dr. Laurie Santos mentions that our tastes and interests change throughout life as we experience change, which of your tastes have changed for the better?
  3. Dr. Maya Shankar describes that although our circumstances are different, you can identify with other people because the emotions are similar, when have you ever felt identified with another person even though their experience is not identical to yours?

Wellbeing Gym Activities

S5 - Guess, Guesser

Objective: To encourage social interaction and strengthen emotional bonds through games or dynamics.

Description: The student should meet with a group of friends. At least 2 people are needed to carry out the dynamics. They will be divided into two teams, team A and team B.

  • Each team will be provided with leaves and pens, they will need a timer, and they can use their cell phones.
  • The sheets of paper will be cut into small pieces of paper, each one should contain the name of a film of the student's choice. A total of 12 films are needed per team, more can be more if both teams agree.
  • Once you have the films, each team should put their films in a container or bowl and mix them up.
  • The turn is that a player from team (A) must take a piece of paper from the container of the opposite team (B). He/she will read the movie and must act it out to his/her own team (A), he/she will have a total of 1 minute to guess it.
    • Team (B) must time themselves to make sure they don't go over the minute.
  • The team that guesses the highest number of films will be the winner.

Closing: In childhood, play is an essential part of learning, but as we get older, it is often neglected. Playing can lower stress levels, promote learning and help connect with others. It also triggers the release of endorphins, natural chemicals in the body that make us feel good and promote well-being.  It is a different way to stimulate the mind, enhance creativity, reinforce social skills and increase confidence and empathy with others. Playing and laughing in adulthood, can help bring people together, create a positive bond, and learn to resolve conflicts or disagreements (Kansas State University, 2018).

I1 - Photographic Memory

Objective: To carry out a memory game session in teams of 2 students in order to strengthen memory and teamwork.

Description: We will have a memory game session in pairs, however, the additional challenge of this version of the game will be that one student will be blindfolded (having a chance at the beginning of the game to see the arrangement of the cards) and must be guided by the instructions of the other student to find the corresponding pairs. The student guide must know how to give the appropriate instructions (such as telling the other student to move around the grid of images) and will be responsible for remembering where each image was located.

At the end of a round of play, roles can be exchanged. The images, can either be obtained from a physical memory game or printed out in pairs and marked up.

Note: In the annexes section, there is a link where the images can be obtained to build the memory game.

Closing: As a closing, we will reflect on the importance of teamwork and communication to reach a common goal and that along the way, the fun can be found.  In addition, it helps to raise awareness among people with visual disabilities.
